HOW TO CHOOSE
How to choose a provider
9 categories, 565 providers. This page is a plain guide to which one you actually need, before you start browsing 500 listings.
The categories below sound close to each other on purpose, employer branding overlaps culture, recruitment marketing overlaps RPO, but they are genuinely different services with different scopes and different prices. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a search here goes badly.
01
The 9 categories, at a glance
| Category | What it is | Choose this when |
|---|---|---|
| Employer Branding & EVP Agencies | Specialist agencies that research, build and activate employer value propositions end to end. | You need the EVP itself built or rebuilt, strategy through to activation, not one deliverable. |
| Careers Site & Talent Tech Platforms | Careers site builders, applicant tracking, recruitment CRM and the AI tools embedded in them. | You need the software itself, the careers site, the ATS or the CRM, not the strategy behind it. |
| Culture & Internal Comms Consultancies | Consultancies working on culture, DEI and internal communication. | The problem is internal, culture, DEI or staff communication, not the external employer brand. |
| Recruitment Marketing Agencies | Job advertising, programmatic media, campaign creative and candidate attraction. | You need candidates in specific roles now, through paid media and campaign creative. |
| Research & Employee Listening | Employee surveys, engagement measurement, candidate research and analytics. | You need to measure something, engagement, sentiment or candidate perception, before you act. |
| RPO & Talent Acquisition Outsourcing | Providers who take on some or all of the hiring function, from embedded recruiters to full RPO. | You want to hand over hiring itself, partly or fully, not just the marketing around it. |
| Video & Creative Production | Studios making employer brand film, photography, audio and campaign assets. | You need the asset itself, usually briefed by one of the categories above. |
| Independent Consultants & Freelancers | Individual practitioners and small practices, usually senior, usually hands-on. | You want one senior person, hands-on, for less than a full agency engagement. |
| Certification & Awards Programmes | Certification schemes, employer awards, rankings and standards. | You want third-party validation, a certification or an award, not a service. |

Agency, platform, consultant or RPO
The four categories people most often confuse are worth separating explicitly.
- Agency versus consultant. An agency is a team, usually a retained engagement, end to end. An independent consultant is one senior person, hands-on, usually faster to start and less expensive, with less bandwidth for a large programme.
- Agency versus platform. An agency is a service you retain. A platform is software you buy or subscribe to. If what you need is a careers site or an ATS, that is a platform purchase, not an agency brief, even though an agency may later build on top of it.
- Recruitment marketing versus RPO. A recruitment marketing agency runs the campaign that brings candidates to your existing hiring process. An RPO provider takes over part or all of that hiring process itself, screening, interviewing, sometimes offering. They can work together, they are not substitutes.
- Certification versus everything else. A certification or award validates what you have already done. It does not build, run or measure anything for you.
